In Connecticut, the African immigrant population is increasing, and being overweight remains one of the major health problems facing this group. About 60% and 23% of Connecticut's adults are overweight and obese respectively. Previous research studies have shown favorable perception of one's body weight as a prerequisite factor in weight control. Among African immigrant population living in Connecticut, little is known about body weight perceptions as they become acculturated to the western lifestyle of eating and drinking highly processed foods and large amounts of added sugar, in combination with a sedentary life style which have been widely reported as causes of obesity in United States (Eckel, 1997). This study used a qualitative method of six in-depth interviews with African immigrants living in Hartford County, Connecticut to assess their knowledge, beliefs and perceptions about overweight and obesity. A semi-structured interview guide was developed and used in an in-depth interview style format to collect data from six participants. The findings show that participants were knowledgeable about obesity. Though many of them knew that being overweight or obese, could put someone's life at risk of develop disease, only few of the participants could name the disease someone might develop as a result of being overweight or obese. Results also showed the existing belief that a larger body size is a sign of affluence or good health.
